Pipefire vs Clay for cold email: done for you, or a toolkit you build yourself

Rather not build this yourself? Pipefire runs your cold email end to end.See how it works →

Pipefire and Clay can both take you from a list of businesses to cold emails in an inbox. The difference is who does the work. Clay is a data and workflow toolkit: you build the list in a table, choose which of its data providers to run, write the sequence and connect the mailboxes. Pipefire, which we make, does that work for you and asks you to approve every email before it sends.

Clay is a strong product for teams with someone to run it. Its own pricing page and docs, checked in October 2026, describe tables, data waterfalls across 150+ providers, AI research agents, signals like job changes and funding rounds, a cold email Sequencer, and an Agent Plugin that lets coding agents like Claude Code drive Clay from the command line. For the wider field of list-building tools, see our Clay alternatives guide, which this page does not repeat.

A row with no tick means the two are level. Clay is ahead on several rows, and that is the honest picture: it does far more than cold email.

When is Clay the better choice?

Clay is the better choice when you have someone who will build and run it, and you need more than cold email.

  • You have a sales operations person or GTM engineer. Clay's tables, waterfalls and agents reward someone who builds and maintains them every week. Clay even lists experts and agencies you can hire to build for you.

  • You sell to B2B companies on signals. Clay tracks job changes, promotions, new hires, funding and company news, and can start a sequence when a signal fires. Pipefire does not track signals.

  • You want one data layer for everything. On Growth, Clay syncs with your CRM and data warehouse and pushes audiences to ad platforms. Cold email is one use among many.

  • You want an AI agent to drive it. Clay's Agent Plugin puts its CLI and API inside Claude Code, Codex and Cursor, so an agent can search, enrich and build workflows from a terminal.

  • Your budget is tight and your time is free. Clay's Launch plan starts at $185 a month. If you already own warmed mailboxes and enjoy building tables, the subscription costs less than Pipefire.

When is Pipefire the better choice?

Pipefire is the better choice when you want clients from cold email without learning a new tool or hiring someone to run one.

  • Nothing to build. Tell us what you sell and where. We find the businesses, check every email, buy the domains, warm the mailboxes and draft the emails.

  • Built for local businesses. We search Google Maps for the exact trade in your area, visit each business website to confirm it really does that work, and cut chains, directories and businesses outside the area. The examples on Clay's Sequencer page are B2B software teams.

  • One price, no meters. $497 a month on Standard. There are no Actions or Data Credits to estimate, and no top-ups mid-month.

  • You approve every email. Nothing goes out that you have not seen.

  • The safety rules are published. A campaign pauses itself if bounces pass 3% or complaints pass 0.1%, and a burned domain is replaced by our team. See how we protect deliverability.

Pipefire vs Clay cold email FAQ

Is Pipefire or Clay cheaper for cold email?

Clay's entry price is lower: Launch starts at $185 a month, checked on clay.com in October 2026. You add your own mailboxes and do the list building and writing yourself. Pipefire Standard is $497 a month with domains, mailboxes, warm-up, prospecting and drafting included.

Does Clay send cold email?

Yes. Clay's Sequencer sends sequences of up to 4 emails from Google, Microsoft or SMTP mailboxes you connect, and stops when a lead replies. On the Growth plan you can buy domains and mailboxes inside Clay.

Does Clay build the lead list for you like Pipefire does?

No. Clay gives you the tools: a people and company database, 150+ data providers and AI research agents, and you build the list in a table. Pipefire finds the prospects for each campaign itself, so you do not build the list.

Can I use Pipefire from Claude or another AI agent like Clay's CLI?

Partly. Pipefire has a free MCP server that AI agents can call for its free tools, like checking an email address or a sending domain. Campaigns run inside Pipefire, where every email waits for your approval. Clay's Agent Plugin goes further: its CLI and API let a coding agent build and run Clay workflows.

Who should pick Clay over Pipefire?

A B2B team with a sales operations person or GTM engineer, selling on signals like job changes and funding, who wants one data layer across CRM, ads and email. Pick Pipefire if you sell to local businesses and want the cold email done for you.
